My husband’s motorcycle is a Honda. I intend to get him new motorcycle equipment for his birthday.

LOL Wrong!….Terrible company and nonexistent support!
Sold me a helmet they did not even have…..the next day I try to get ahold of them to buy a different helmet…..Called twice and both times I had to listen to music for 20 minutes, nobody answers!
Emailed them after that…..it is now 10 hours later and they never responded!

Take your money elsewhere!

Definitely, it’s a great idea for a rider to confront a cager and escalate it into an altercation. There’s no way that would wind up terribly for the rider.

I take it you’ve never ridden a 500R then? You need to wind up the engine considerably before the power comes on, and it’s always manageable. There’s more to what makes bikes suitable for beginners than their spec sheets. Go ride them and find out for yourself.

We had no idea that chain tension was a thing. Thank you for pointing out that without the right chain tension, you can get gearbox wear. Though he can do just a few simple handyman things around the home, he is all thumbs when it comes to mechanics. We will call a motorcycle repair professional to make sure that the tension is right before he starts riding it for the season.

Comment on [GUIDE] Shopping for a Used Motorcycle Helmet by Bart Groothuijze https://www.bestbeginnermotorcycles.com/used-motorcycle-helmet-buying-guide/#comment-3297 Sun, 30 Jan 2022 13:15:41 +0000 https://www.bestbeginnermotorcycles.com/?p=56584#comment-3297 At CASTODIAN Foundation our motto is “Guarding Heads. Saving Lives.”

Our advice: NEVER buy a used helmet, EVER!

From research, we know that there are 7 factors that make a helmet – any helmet – safe for its user, and for this specific user alone. (Check https://castodian.org/)

The 3 most important of these 7 factors are:
1. A helmet should be without any damage or defects
2. It should be less than 7 years old, from production date
3. The (new!) helmet should fit very tight, as it will become a bit bigger through wearing

At 1. There is NO WAY one can see and make sure whether a helmet does not have some kind of damage / crack in the inner-helmet, the impact-absorbing liner in the picture above; this goes especially for the plastic / polycarbonate helmets, as this material is highly flexible, does not (easily) break with a crash and gets back to its initial form after a crash.
However the shock-absorbing inner-helmet has sustained irrepairable damage and lost all its absorbing qualities, without this being visible, and is NOT safe!

At 2. This is a really important safety-factor as well: although (and especially with outer-shells from composite material, like e.g. fiberglass or carbon) the outer-shell will be “OK” for at least 7 to up to 10 years or longer, the inner-shell however is NOT!
This inner-shell, the part that absorbs the energy of a crash, is in 99% of all cases made of polystyrene: after 7 years, whether the helmet is being used OR NOT, this material will have lost its absorbing ability, due to the loss of the plasticisers!

(NOTE. The above thus also means that “bargains” when buying a helmet can be tricky too: these 7 years also apply to helmets on the shelf with dealers!)

At 3. If a helmet is too large (and therewith fits fairly comfortably), which is unfortunately too often the case, it either might come-off during a crash, or might shift and breaks ones collarbone or – even worse – damages neck vertebrae.
A new helmet, especially at the beginning, should fit (overly) tight, as in time it will get a bit bigger and “forms to ones head”. A used helmet had gone through this process already, with its prior user, and therefor will have a less proper fit at all times!

As a genuinly certified***, NEW and therewith in basis safe helmet can already be found from as less as $50,00, one NEVER should buy a used helmet!

(***DOT does NOT have the highest safety standard, compared to SNELL, SHARP or even ECE, but is the official and minimum certification standard for the US: there are helmets in the market that apply to several certification standards at the same time)

Comment on 7 Reasons You Should Ride a Scooter Instead of a Motorcycle by K Walker https://www.bestbeginnermotorcycles.com/7-reasons-you-should-ride-a-scooter-instead-of-a-motorcycle/#comment-3227 Sat, 22 Jan 2022 22:20:50 +0000 https://www.bestbeginnermotorcycles.com/?p=54875#comment-3227 Been a Honda PCX rider for nearly 3 years now & no going back to bigger bikes. Mainly because Scottish motorcyle dealers now seem to cater only to the occasional, low mileage, sunny day riders. I got fed up with the hassle of waiting 6+ weeks for service slots, sales staff who don’t know their product & how to sell effectively, & sub-standard/dangerous workmanship from pretendy ‘technicians’. I get 128mpg from my PCX, self-service it, & it lives at my apartment in Spain for using when I’m there.
Car use only for me in Scotland these days. If car dealers here offered the same service bike dealers do, they’d be out of business within months!

BUT what about a Can am Spyder? Called a motorcycle, but has J rims allowing fitment of car tyres. There is only one brand of motorcycle tyre that fits, and a lot of people have grave doubts about the quality of them. Car tyres seem to be a credible alternative, although they are rated to carry much more weight.

You will find almost 100% will say “no way ” and if you are unlucky enough to be an accident victim wearing these tyres your insurance company will drop you like a hot potatoe, just watch your costs esculate to mind blowing proportions wiping out any costs saving from buying car tyres, its simply not safe and you risk buggaring up some other poor sole that gets caught up with you.

Helge Pederson I think reckons a car tyre on the rear and sidecar (making them interchangeable) is a good idea. I think also he suggested putting the original rear motorcycle tyre onto the front of the bike. From memory he used a company in the US for this “kit”. He would know.
Cheers

A Triumph Bonneville from the 1960s had about 45 horse and weighed in at 410 pounds. It was not a beginner bike by anyone’s stretch of the imagination. Have people suddenly become more adept? Even better is the description of a Triumph Trident 660 as entry level bike. It has a mere 80 horsepower and tops out over 100 mph. Someone needs to get real about what entry level riders need,

Excellent bike, great handling, very forgiving, and easy to learn on. It was my second bike, but also my favorite.
